How to Pack a Smoothie with Omega 3’s

drinking-smoothie-on-couchSo, here’s the situation guys. I don’t like fish. At all. In fact, the only time I’ll actually eat it is if someone else prepares it, because I just can’t stomach the smell of it (which I realize sounds dramatic, but it’s definitely accurate). My husband also isn’t a massive fish fan, which basically means we eat zero fish in our household.

And I really don’t feel like we’re missing out. At least not on the fish part. But I do worry about the fact that we’re missing out on the Omega 3’s IN the fish. We do our best to ensure our family eats a balanced diet that provides a varied source of vitamins and minerals. But Omega 3’s? Those bad boys are tough to get if you’re not eating all the fish.

Omega 3’s Matter!

Why do I care so much about Omega 3’s? Here’s a quick snapshot of just a few of things Omega 3’s are known to help with: they can promote brain health during pregnancy, as well as during early life and they can improve risk factors for heart disease. If that list isn’t enough to make you think seriously about incorporating these bad boys in your diet, then I don’t know what is!

But here’s the other piece of the puzzle for us. We’ve been looking for ways to incorporate more plant-based options in our diet too. So, when I discovered NutraVege (it’s vegan!) I knew I needed to tell you guys about it.

NutraVege is a plant-based Omega 3 that’s high in EPA and DHA and it’s derived from sustainably sourced algae. It’s available in both liquid and liquid-gel formats (though I’m partial to the liquid options), and it’s a more efficient and direct plant-based source of EPA and DHA than flax or hemp seeds! Also, some formulas have Vitamin D included, which is right up my Canadian shade-loving alley!

Omega 3 Smoothie To The Rescue

So, here’s what we’ve been doing. In the morning I whip up one of my favourite smoothies using this recipe:

¼ cup plain Greek yogurt

½ banana

½ cup water

½ cup fruit of choice (ideally frozen)

½ cup raw vegetable

Most often I use frozen mixed berried for the fruit and spinach for the veg, but you can go wild trying any combination your heart desires and just stick with the proportions above: raspberry/beet, orange/carrot, pineapple/squash, go wild! I throw all of that in the blender, blend it, then add a teaspoon of NutraVege, stir by hand, and drink up! (You can also totally take the NutraVege on it’s own – I just find it’s a good way for me to get an extra boost of fruits and veg at the same time).

So, it’s official. NutraVege is going to be a staple in our household.

And tilapia? It’s still definitely not.
