There’s nothing quite like curling up with a cozy fleece blanket by the fire with a hot chocolate in hand. And I can be the only one who’s been eyeing those gorgeous, luxe pompom blankets, while secretly thinking… “I think I could make that”! You know we love a good DIY!

Well, guess what? You can make your own! And this DIY Pompom Fleece Blanket might just be the easiest project you’ll take on this year. Spoiler alert: it also makes an amazing gift.

What you’ll need:

Fleece material (at a minimum you’ll need two pieces of fleece 1.5 x 1m in size, but you can make them larger if you’d like a larger blanket)

Pompom trim of your choice (you’ll need about 2m of trim, or enough to span both ends of your blanket, but I always get a bit extra just in case)

Scissors

Pins

Sewing machine and coordinating thread

How to Make Your DIY Pompom Fleece Blanket:

  1. Cut your fleece into two pieces (a front and back piece) to your preferred dimensions. I would suggest 1×1.5m at a minimum.
  2. Lay the pieces on top of each other with the right sides of the fleece (the sides you want to see on the outside of the blanket) facing each other.
  3. Measure the short edges of your blanket (the ‘ends’ of the rectangle) and cut two pieces of pompom trim the same length.

  1. Tuck one length of pompom trim into each end of your fleece sandwich. You want the pompoms to lay inside your two pieces of fleece, against the right sides, so that when the blanket is sewn the pompoms will show on the outside.
  2. Pin the edges of the blanket, making sure to capture the pompom trim in your pins on the short ends of your blanket.

  1. Use a generous seam allowance of about a half inch (I find fluffy fleece is a bit squirmy when sewing!), and sew all around the blanket, removing the pins as you go. Leave a six-inch opening in your seam.
  2. Use the seam opening to turn the blanket right-side-in. Your pompom trim should be visible along each edge and the right sides of your fabric should be facing out.
  3. Fold the edges of your seam opening in and pin them together. Sew along the opening to close the seam.
  4. Snuggle your brand-new beautiful DIY Pompom Fleece blanket!

Project Tips:

  • Pompom trim can be expensive! I always wait for a sale or coupon to be available and use it to stock up.
  • If you can’t find the perfect fleece material, sometimes buying a fleece throw when it’s on sale is less expensive than buying the material on its own. You can rip out a couple of seams and add your own trim!
