I know there’s a lot of mom-debate out there about whether a video monitor is a necessary baby gear item, or whether it’s just a luxury. And I get it! On the surface, it may seem like something you could do without. But don’t be fooled. In our house they’re absolutely essential, and I’m going to tell you why we have not one, but TWO video monitors these days.
Video Monitor #1:
This one goes in the nursery.
For me, having a video monitor with a full view of the crib/bassinet eases so much anxiety with a new babe. Knowing that I can take a quick peek at my sleeping baby at any time, makes me so much more relaxed and efficient during naps (especially those new baby naps that only last like 20 mins!). I can easily get some work done or be at the other end of the house (on a different floor) playing with Emmett and know that I’ll hear and see Charlie as soon as she wakes up. Added bonus? Em loves ‘spying’ on his baby sissy on the monitor, and I get some stress-free 1-on-1 time with my big guy while the babe sleeps!
Video Monitor #2:
This is the one I honestly didn’t ever realize that I’d need. And it goes in our toddler’s room!
You might think that Em’s outgrown a video monitor at this point (honestly, I kinda thought he would have too)… but here’s the thing. JUST when you think you’re getting past the monitor days, your spunky toddler will surprise you by learning how to climb everything. Including the sides of their crib. Luckily, Em’s still in a sleep sack so he hasn’t fully mastered the crib climb just yet. But, he’s just learned how to unzip his feet from the sack, so we’re bracing ourselves for the impending transition to a big-boy bed. And when our *ahem* energetic little guy has newfound access to his whole room, having a video monitor in there to make sure he’s safe (and not literally climbing the walls) will be a huge relief!
And because I know you’re going to ask, here’s the scoop on our favourite video monitor. We’ve tried a few since Em was a newborn, and the Philips AVENT Digital Video Monitor is the one we love. Here’s why:
- It’s got a huge screen (3.5”) that has fabulous resolution even in the dark
- The range is great (150 ft) so I can use it anywhere in the house (and on our back deck)
- There’s a built-in temperature reading which comes in super handy in a nursery when you’re trying to keep a new babe comfortable
- You can adjust the brightness and volume to suit the room you’re in, and it even has a vibration setting which is great if you’re downstairs in a noisy room
- It creates a private and secure connection, so you don’t have to worry about anyone hacking your monitor feed (it’s a thing, I swear!)
It’s no surprise that we use the Philips Avent Video Monitor – we love ALL of their baby gear. In fact we love it so much, that we want to share the love with you! Go ahead and enter below for a chance to win a Philips AVENT Anti-Colic Bottle Giftpack (retail value: $87.99)!
