Sleep. It sometimes feels like a four letter word in our house.
Let’s face it, it can be a full-time job to get our kids to sleep well. Any parent who manages to get multiple kids to go to bed, stay in bed, and stay asleep basically deserves an Olympic medal in my opinion.
We’ve been working to settle both kids into a new sleep routine since we brought Charlie home (Emmett’s a notoriously finicky sleeper), and we’ve finally landed on something that seems to be working for us (that’s probably a whole different blog post).
But what I realized, was that in the midst of all the kids’ sleep challenges, the quality of my and my husband’s sleep had deteriorated to a giant mess of exhaustion.
So it was time. I started to take a few cues from what we’d done with the kids to try to get my own sleep back on track! So far (on days when, you know, the kids aren’t sick, I’m not sick, and we’re in our own beds) it’s working. So I wanted to share what we’ve done!
- Create a bedtime routine for yourself
Routines aren’t just for the kids. Creating a simple routine for yourself before you fall asleep can help your body and mind relax more quickly, and settle into sleep more easily. For me it’s as simple as taking my vitamin, putting lotion on my hands, and turning on a humidifier before I get into bed. Simple but effective in helping me relax.
- Turn off your devices, and read before you sleep
I know this one’s controversial… but let me qualify this one. I mean pull out an old school, paper book. The more mindless the better. I’m not suggesting this is the time to allocate time to a heavy biography, or personal development book. I’m suggesting you find a crime novel, or sappy chick lit book and dive in for a few minutes. It helps me check out from my day, and let’s my brain slow down before I sleep. I swear it works – try it!
- Invest in your sleep.
My hubby and I realized about a month ago that we were literally sleeping in two giant trenches in our old mattress, and that our bed had the oldest pillows in the house. Seriously? Were we shocked that we couldn’t get a good night’s sleep? We swapped out our old mattress for an ENDY mattress (yep, you order it online and get a no risk 100 night trial!) and two brand new ENDY pillows. We can’t feel each other move around, so we don’t wake up as much through the night, we’re more comfortable, and we can adjust the ‘fluffiness’ of our pillows to our own preference, so we’re both happy. Also, Endy is a Canadian company and their mattresses are made in Canada which I really, really love. It was a game-changer, and frankly I can’t believe we stuck with the old, crummy mattress for so long. Thinking about giving an ENDY mattress a go? Here’s a little gift for you! You can use code EMMETTSABCS50 to save $50 on any mattress!
So here’s hoping this helps you just a little bit too, and we can all have more snoozy nights… because when mama’s happy, everyone’s happy!
