This DIY macrame plant hanger is possibly one of the easiest DIYs we’ve tackled yet, and we have about four of them in our house to date!
It’s a great way to keep plants out of reach of toddlers, dogs, cats or just swinging elbows and who doesn’t love a little macrame project?
If you can tie ten knots and own a pair of scissors, you can make this bad boy!
Materials:
cotton macrame cord
ring hanger
wooden beads
scissors
How We Made Our Plant Hanger:
Decide how long you’d like the plant hanger to be (is there a specific window you’d like it to hang in front of?), then take that measurement, multiply it by two (you’ll fold the cord in half) and add six inches (for the knots you’ll tie).
Cut four pieces of cord all the same length. Using all four pieces, tie a knot to secure the ring at the midpoint (so all cord sections are the same length).
Separate the cords into pairs, and tie knots in each pair at equal distance from the top. Our first knots are 12 inches from the top, but if your plant hanger is longer you’ll want to make then a bit farther down. There’s no magic distance, just whatever looks right for you!
Lay the knots out side-by-side, take one cord from each side-by-side knot, and tie them together at equal distances from the top. These knots should be slightly closer to the knots above them, because they’ll secure the pot in the hanger. In our case, this row of knots is four inches from the row above it.
Once you’ve tied this row of knots (you should have a complete circle of knots now), tie all the cords together in one large knot. In our case, we tied this knot 4 inches below the row above. This large knot is the base that your plant pot will sit on.
And that’s it! If you’d like to add any beads to the ends of the cords, you can secure them with knots. Otherwise, pop in your favourite plant and a leafy green pal, and enjoy your new pretty macrame plant hanger!
