Anyone else have tiny hair bows exploding out of their daughter’s room? Anyone? No? Just me?
Charlie’s room is a pretty small space, so to prevent her from actually drowning in all of her bows, I decided to put these cute little DIY Macrame Bow Holders together.
They’re part wall-hanging and part bow-holder, so they look just as cute without the bows and they keep things organized (which is definitely my sweet spot). Oh, and they took about 5 minutes to make and cost about $5. Not too shabby, right?
So, here’s how you can whip one up:
What You’ll Need:
Scissors
Wooden Dowel (or a cute stick)
Cotton Macrame Cord
Wooden Beads (these are optional – I thought I’d add them, but didn’t in the end!)
How to Make It:
To start, tie a piece of cord to each end of your dowel. This will be the ‘hanger’ that you use to hang your bow holder on the wall.
Next, decide how long you want your bow holder to be at its longest point, then double it and cut. For reference the cord pieces I cut for the small arrowhead bow holder were about 27 inches long and hang 13.5 inches once halved and knotted. (Note: If you want to add any braided sections to your bow hanger add an extra four inches of length to each cord piece)
Go ahead and cut 10-15 cord pieces of the same length (you may need to add a few more depending on the length of your dowel, but it’s easy to cut more later once you know the length you want them to be).
Fold your first piece of cord in half. Slide the folded end up behind your dowel, and tuck the cut ends through the folded loop.
Pull the cut ends to tighten, and slide the cord piece into place along your dowel.
Repeat the last two steps until you have enough cord pieces to cover your dowel in between the “hanger” knots.
Now you have two options!
- If you want to create an arrowhead shape bow holder, lay your work on a flat surface and find the middle pieces of cord. Then mark the outside edges of your arrowhead at equal lengths on your two outside cord pieces. Cut straight lines from your middles pieces to your outside marks. Taadaaa!
- If you want to add some braids to your bow holder, just choose how many and where you’d like them, and start braiding! I did a chunky braid in the middle (doubled up my strands) and then added four shorted single braids at equal distances around it. Each braid is finished with a simple knot. Once you’re finished braiding, cut all your cord ends to the same length, and you’re done!
If you want to add any beads, now’s the time! Otherwise, take your beautiful creation, hang in on the wall, and get organizing those bows!
