Are we getting the flu shot this year?
Well, there’s a relatively simple answer to that question. You see, there are two things we ask our kids to be: Strong and Kind. That’s it. No matter what they’re doing, or where they are, we ask them to be those two things.
So, let’s apply that same logic to the flu shot decision we make as a family: do we get the shot?
Does it keep us strong?
Yep. Sure does. This year it’s predicted to be an especially tough year for the flu. Australia (often an indicator for what’s to come in Canada) has had an especially rough flu season this year with more than 30,000 confirmed cases. So, we can expect ours to be pretty darn rough too. But what’s the good news? 70-90 percent of flu cases can be averted by getting the flu shot! So, when we ask our kids to do everything they can to be strong, you better bet that getting the flu shot is on that list.
Are you being kind?
You might think this one’s a bit more of a grey area when it comes to getting the flu shot. But guess what? It’s not. Do you know who’s at the highest risk of getting the flu? And who’s likely to suffer the most once they do get it? Tiny babies (we have A LOT of those in our lives), pregnant mamas, seniors (those grandparents we love), plus friends and family who have chronic medical conditions. We have people in every single one of those categories in our lives. They matter. And thinking about them when we’re making our flu shot decision matters. We’re grateful to be healthy and strong, but we also know that showing care and concern for people who aren’t as strong right now is kind. And that matters big time.
So, the answer to whether we’re getting our flu shot this year? It’s a big YES.
